Jesus and Empire

Richard Horsley's chapter, "Jesus and Empire," tackled a lot of issues with the life and time of Jesus during Roman rule. Yall have covered a few of the major issues, but the thing that stood out the most to me was the role Jesus played during the time of Roman rule. The Bible portrays this image of Jesus as the Savior he has come to be and yes he does act out or say things that others disagree with but I always thought that Jesus was just doing what he needed to do. This chapter puts things in a new light. Jesus was looked at as an insurgent and for that he was crucified. I knew that Jesus was going about in spreading the good news of the gospel, but his doing so was going against the rule of the land. Comparing Jesus to an insurgent was surprising at first, but it allowed me to realize why he was crucified to the magnitude that he was.
